All this is true, and much more might be said--indeed, much more is said by her biographer, in this sketch of her life and work, which first appeared in the Century of last October. It was in the Century that her last poem, "To Carmen Sylva," written in her quiet retreat at Malvern, England, in July, 1886, was first printed. And it is from the pages of the Century, as well as from Lipfincotfs, the Critic, and especially the American Hebrew, that many of the songs and poems are collected which fill these two choice volumes. Some poetry we must consider apart from the life of the writer, in order to give it just regard. Byron's is perhaps the first name that suggests itself in connection with such a thought. But in most cases the life helps to explain and beautify--often to humanize--the poetry, while this in its turn seems to reveal the life. It is so with EMMA LAZARUS. Miss Lazarus. Her life was even and refined. From her birth in New York, in 1849, till her death there, at home, in 1887, there seem to have occurred no great crises, none of the visible turning-points upon which we can put a finger and say, here was the choice made. One of a family of seven, of strict Jewish descent, her call to poetry came early. Of her four poems written at the age of fourteen, three were on death and one on growing old. This morbid precocity was soon outgrown, and ever after we find a keen love of nature and a joyous sympathizing with hope and beauty.
